Fantasy football start sit strategy
Start/sit decisions are easiest when you separate role, matchup and team context. One projected point total should not be the only reason a player enters or leaves your lineup.
Start with opportunity
Volume is the foundation. Snaps, routes, touches, targets and goal-line work usually matter more than a single recent fantasy score.
Use matchup as a tiebreaker
Matchups matter, but they should usually adjust a player’s expectation rather than completely override a strong role. When two options have similar usage, opponent strength can become the deciding factor.
Match risk to your matchup
If you are a heavy favorite, a stable floor can be valuable. If you are a major underdog, a higher-variance option with more big-play or touchdown upside may make more sense.
Recheck injuries and game status
Late injury news can change a player’s workload and the opportunities around him. Final lineup decisions should account for active/inactive status and changes to teammates who affect usage.
Start/sit checklist
- Compare projected role and opportunity.
- Check injury status and expected limitations.
- Use matchup and game environment as context.
- Consider floor versus ceiling based on your matchup.
- Prefer clear volume when two options are otherwise close.
