Fantasy football waiver wire strategy
Waivers are where fantasy seasons are often won after the draft. A good waiver process focuses on changing opportunity, not just the points a player scored last week.
Chase roles before box scores
Look for changes in snaps, routes, touches, targets, red-zone work and depth-chart position. A player with a growing role can be more valuable than a one-week scorer whose usage has not changed.
Use FAAB with context
Your budget should reflect league depth, roster need, season timing and how replaceable the player is. Early-season breakouts can justify aggressive bids because there are more weeks left to benefit from the acquisition.
Prioritize contingent upside
Backups with a clear path to a major workload can be worth rostering before an injury happens. The waiver wire is not only for fixing problems after they appear.
Do not churn useful depth for tiny upgrades
Every free-agent move has an opportunity cost. Before dropping a player, compare the new player’s realistic weekly role with what you are giving up.
Weekly waiver checklist
- Review injuries and depth-chart changes.
- Compare opportunity trends, not only fantasy points.
- Rank claims before deciding how much FAAB to spend.
- Consider your next several matchups and bye weeks.
- Keep bench spots available for players whose roles can grow.
